Meet Our Mascot, Freddy the Eel

When customers enter the Competition Automotive waiting room for the first time, they rarely miss the huge tank that takes up almost an entire wall. But they usually think it's empty—that is, until they notice the "plants" start to move. When they get up and peer into the tank, they're usually quite surprised to discover a very unusual-looking creature inside it. That creature is a moray eel named Freddy, and he's Competition Automotive's mascot. Feel free to spend some time with Freddy while you're here. He loves company.

Freddy has called Competition Automotive home for several years now. The attention he attracts isn’t surprising, since there's probably no other auto repair shop in the country—maybe the world?—with a four-and-a-half-foot moray eel in the waiting room. Understandably, people tend to have a lot of questions about Freddy. Here are some of the most common ones. Let us know if you have others....

He weighs 30 pounds and is 4½ feet long. Moray eels grow to be about seven feet long.

Every wild animal is dangerous. But there's no need to be afraid: Freddy can’t hurt anyone when he’s in his tank. Eels do bite, though usually only if provoked. Freddy has bitten Steve Adman, Competition Automotive's owner, twice, both times while Steve was handling him, including once when Steve was trying to pet him (in retrospect, perhaps not the best idea). That time Steve had to go to the hospital to get a shot. The doctors and nurses were perplexed by the bite mark; they'd seen plenty of dog bites, but eels bites were outside the realm of their experience. Steve was fine; the shot was just a precaution. And he doesn't hold it against Freddy.

In addition to biting, eels can act like boa constrictors, and squeeze their prey to death. But again: Not to worry, because Freddy can't get out of the tank. You can safely marvel at him from the other side of the glass.

Moray eels likes squid, flounder, whiting, code, bluefish, flounder . . . things you can buy at a fish market. Once in a while Freddy gets a special treat. Rumor has it there have been nights Steve's family ate spaghetti while Freddy feasted on jumbo shrimp.

He’s about twelve years old. Moray eels usually live about 25 to 30 years.

Well, actually his full name is Fredrick Norton III. Freddy is just a nickname....

It’s a 600-gallon tank. It was custom-built in Tennessee, transported to Yonkers, New York, and then delivered to Competition Automotive in Island Park. Empty, it weights almost a thousand pounds (!!!).

Well, he has no eyelids, so it can be hard to tell, but yes, he does sleep. You can deduce that he’s zoned out when his reaction time is very slow. Steve claims he's caught Freddy upside down and snoring.

Freddy has cataracts. Sadly, eels can get cataracts just as people can.

No.

The experts at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead have helped a few times when Freddy was under the weather. That aquarium is actually where Freddy will go when he outgrows his tank at Competition Automotive. Eels need space. If Freddy were too cooped up, it would make him so stressed out that he could actually die. So the Long Island Aquarium will be his retirement home.

Feel free to drop in and see Freddy anytime. Competition Automotive is open Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M.
